Often I’ll buy random clothes on sale and stash them in the dye box. The kids know they can raid this and dye something whenever they like, and that’s what happened with this striped tie-dye t-shirt.

Watch Gabrielle transform a plain white cropped t-shirt with tie-dyed stripes, plus a splash of black over the top.

To create tie-dyed stripes, pleat your item at a 90-degree angle to the way you’d like your stripes. You might be tempted to just squirt your dye onto your flat shirt, but don’t do that! It looks terrible.

Once you have reasonably neat pleats apply your dye in stripes of the width you’d like. You can use rubber bands or string to keep your pleats neat, provide a guide to where to stop/start each colour. This will also leave some of your base colour (in this case, white) between each stripe.

The black over the top is another variation of the spider tie-dye method. It’s an easy way to add another layer of interest. and some contrast to the brighter colours.

We use Procion dyes, but if you want something a little simpler Tulip tie-dye kits are a great option.

Thanks for watching! We’d love to hear if you decide to try it and DIY your own tie dyes. Tag @dyediyhq on Instagram or Facebook and we’ll check it out.
